2009 Winners Announced!

...Congratulations to Bonnie Kinkopf, Yoshi Andrego, Heather Muro and Erik van Lunteren!

This beautiful photograph of a freighter navigating Collision Bend, taken by Bonnie Kinkopf of Mayfield Heights, was the judges’ favorite for this year’s Downtown Photo Challenge. From a unique vantage point above the Flats Kinkopf captured a soft light and a delicate moment in time for this massive vessel. The photo brings out the beauty of an archetypical Cleveland scene.

The judges were taken with this spontaneous image by Heather Muro of Elyria. Shot outside of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame looking south, this image conveys the vibrancy and excitement to be found in our city.

This photograph was taken by Yoshi Andrego, from his kitchen window on the east side of Cleveland. The judges were captivated by the colors, and the long exposure time that allowed an airplane to create a streak of light in the sky.

Erik van Lunteren of Shaker Heights swept this category with an image that captures economic development radiating out from Downtown and carrying Cleveland into the future. Shown here is the University Hospitals cancer center under construction.

The deadline for the 2009 Downtown Photo Challenge was August 16th. We received more than 400 fantastic submissions to the contest this year, proudly portraying the life and built environment of downtown Cleveland.  We asked, "What defines your experience here?  What story do you want to tell about our city?"  And photographers from all over the region responded with beautiful and unique depictions of Cleveland through the public eye.

Each entrant submitted up to two (2) images.  Each photo was submitted to one of the three categories described below.  Read on for more information.

Entry Categories

Living City
Cleveland would be nothing without Clevelanders.  Whether it's large scale events, small informal happenings, spontaneous moments on the street, interactions among friends or between strangers... it is people that bring the city to life.  Submit your best images of Cleveland's great citizens and visitors to this category.

Urban Landscape
From classic Cleveland vantage points to views of the city all your own, we want to see the Downtown environment through your eyes.  Submit your best shots of Cleveland's architecture, green spaces, waterfronts and streetscapes.

Future Forward
In this category we are looking for images that exemplify growth, optimism, creativity and positive change around Downtown. What are Clevelanders doing to make the best of hard times?  What types of projects are people taking on?  How are businesses weathering the economy?  What are people doing to stay positive?  Submit your photographs that you feel show a bright future for our city!
